If the movie was actors vs the industry it might have been a more concise story that would make an actual point and criticism of Hollywood. He is on his knees crying in his church, the theater, over how beautiful it was to be apart of it and fondly remembers the party at the start of the film. My comment about the ending is important because Manny doe not regret what he did. They are concerned with the after party and will sacrifice themselves for it. The focus is on the stars and what they are willing to do to stay on top. But the story is not interested in this aspect. Which we the audience see, as people literally die to make a film. The whole thing is a mess just to show three individuals obsessed with the glamor and debauchery of "Babylon" this biblical party that ended for all of them.Įdit: so a lot of people have been commenting the same thing so I'll try to better explain my point.Ī lot of people have pointed out that it's a commentary on the film industry.
Tobey Maguire's character could have been cut and nothing important would have been lost. They could have cut large chunk s of the film and it would have been better. The surrealist coming to "god of the theater" in the last 15min didn't help either. Its a film that is all the way up its own ass about how good stars are, and how despite all the mess, they made something great and important. Shot well, very vibrant, but its all about how great film and stars use to be and the story of all all of them just fail as the silent films change to voice and color. Answer: I actually did see this in theaters with friends.
